WebWhacker 3.2 for Windows 95/98/NT
Q:  After installing and using WebWhacker, can I access the Web without WebWhacker?
A:
Yes, you can. When WebWhacker quits, it changes the proxy server information in your Web browser back to the way it was before you started running WebWhacker.

Q:  Why can I not access the Web without WebWhacker?
A:  One possible reason is that WebWhacker did not have the opportunity to change the proxy server information in your Web browser back to its original state. To fix this problem, restart WebWhacker then exit. If this did not fix your problem, then make sure WebWhacker is not started and either remove the proxy server information from your Web browser or change it back to its original setting.

Q:  When offline, why does it take a long time to display a page when double-clicking on a URL in WebWhacker?
A:  This is probably because you have the "Allow passthru on cache misses" selected. That option should only be selected when you are online. To fix this problem, select Tools / Preferences..., and on the Proxy Server tab deselect this option.

Q:  When online, why do I see a page with a yellow face when I click on a link in my Web browser?
A:  This is probably because you have the "Allow passthru on cache misses" deselected. That option should only be deselected when you are offline. To fix this problem, select Tools / Preferences..., and on the Proxy Server tab select this option.

Q:  Why does my Web browser start dialing the modem when I double-click on a URL in WebWhacker while off-line?
A:  When you double-click on a URL in WebWhacker, the program sends the URL to your Web browser. Your Web browser may be configured with a Winsock program that automatically dials the modem when it receives a URL. Therefore, the problem is between your Web browser and Winsock, not with WebWhacker. The solution is to use a Winsock that allows you to stop dialing. Some Winsock programs, like Trumpet, do not allow you to cancel the dialing.

Q:  Where do I enter 127.0.0.1 as the proxy server?
A:  WebWhacker acts like a proxy server, and it automatically reconfigures your Web browser to use WebWhacker as the proxy server. The IP address of 127.0.0.1 and Port number of 8080 tells the Web browser to look on your own computer for the proxy server, and that's where it will find the whacked data. If your computer is behind a firewall, then the IP address and Port number of the firewall will be automatically transferred from your Web browser to WebWhacker when you start WebWhacker. Therefore, the only place where 127.0.0.1 should be entered is in your Web browser. That IP address is never to be entered into WebWhacker. If 127.0.0.1 is entered into WebWhacker, it will not work correctly.

Q:  What do I enter in WebWhacker as the proxy server?
A:  Every time WebWhacker is started, it sees how your Web browser is configured for a proxy server and transfers that information into WebWhacker. Normally, you do not need to enter anything into WebWhacker. If WebWhacker somehow loses this proxy server information from your Web browser, you can add it by selecting Tools / Preferences... and adding it on the Proxy Server tab.

Q:  My Web browser has the name of a computer as a proxy server instead of an IP address. Why does WebWhacker not work correctly?
A:  Some PC configurations require that WebWhacker use the IP address of the proxy server instead of the computer name. The solution is to add the IP address of the proxy server to WebWhacker by selecting Tools / Preferences... and entering it on the Proxy Server tab. If you don't know the IP address of the computer that is your proxy server, ask your Network Administrator.

Q:  What if my proxy server requires a username and password?
A:  WebWhacker cannot be used if your firewall or proxy server requires a username and password to access the Internet.
Top

Q:  Why does WebWhacker still not work after I've configured it for my proxy server?
A:  WebWhacker only works with a CERN proxy server. It does not work with SOCKS or other types of proxy servers. If you don't know which type of proxy server is being used at your location, ask your Network Administrator

Q:  I can see the page in my browser. Why can't WebWhacker whack it?
A:  WebWhacker maintains its own connection to the Internet that is separate from your Web browser's connection to the Internet. One possible problem is that the proxy server information is not correctly entered into WebWhacker. To view what has been set, select Tools / Preferences..., and click on the Proxy Server tab. If you are behind a firewall, that proxy server's IP address and Port number should be in the Remote Proxy fields

Q:  When exporting files, why can't I see the images?
A:  The Export function in WebWhacker is similar to the File / Save As... function of your Web browser, except that it adds the ability to automatically save all images or other associated files. The exported page file contains only raw HTML the information you see when you select View / Source in your Web browser. Unless the Web page creator used relative URLs to reference embedded graphics, these exported pages do not display images. However, the text file of the Web page and the graphic files can be viewed with any application that can deal with those particular file types. For example, you can view the HTML code with most text editor or word processors such as WordPad, and you can view image files with most photo-editing applications (such as Photoshop). You can also view the Web page and images separately using your Web browser.

Q:  When I try to do a scheduled whack, WebWhacker displays a "Buffer is Invalid" error message. How do I fix this problem?
A:  This error message is displayed when you are using a modem and a Dial-Up Networking connection is not selected within WebWhacker. To fix this, select Preferences from the Tools menu, then click on the Phone tab. If you are using a modem, make sure the Use Modem field is checked. Then double-click on the desired Dial-Up Networking connection to place it in the Phone Book Entry field.

Q:  When do I fill in my User Name, Password and Domain on the Phone tab of the Preferences dialog?
A:  You need to add this information to WebWhacker only when it is different than the information in the Dial-Up Networking connection that is selected in the Phone Book Entry field.

Q:  I've configured WebWhacker for my Web browser and have whacked successfully. Why can I not browse off-line?
A:  In your Web browser, there could be extra characters after the proxy server information in the Preferences dialog. Make sure that there are no other characters after the 127.0.0.1 in the Proxy server field.

Q:  Can WebWhacker ignore or filter out certain types of files?
A:  Yes, WebWhacker can ignore inline images, which will make the whacking of pages faster. To do this, select Preferences... from the Tools menu. On the General tab, select Ignore Inline Images.
